Gallery Exhibit: Dennis Southwick

Dennis Southwick started making art as a youth grouwing up in Beatrice, Nebraska, and has continued creating art for over 60 years. He earned a B.S. degree in art from the Kearney State College in Nebraska in 1965, and a Masters degree from Fort Hays State University in 1967. Dennis spent the years after college splitting time between making art and teaching art. In the late sixties and early seventies he lived and exhibited in the Sacramento, California area. It was also at this time that he married Nadine and began the adventure of being a husband and father. In the seventies he returned to Kansas where he still resides.

Artist Statement
"Painting is a way for me to explore and reflect the world I inhabit, as well as a way to discover more about myself. It is also a place to do new things, a place to grow, and a place to share. I observe the world with awe and reverence. I am constantly amazed by the beauty surrounding us, not just in the grand vistas, but also in the details of small things closely observed. My paintings usually start with something I have seen, experienced, or felt; and evolve through the process of painting into a new, sometimes unexpected, image. Each painting takes on a life of its own as it progresses from an idea or feeling into a finished work. I have been painting for over 60 years and much of the process has become somewhat intuitive for me, yet every painting presents new challenges, frustrations, and rewards. My hope is that the paintings spark a response or connection with the viewer, for a painting is only complete when someone interacts with it."
